 Philosophy of History

Beginning philosophy students often ask about the difference between the History of Philosophy and the Philosophy of History. The history of philosophy is the study of traditions of philosophy in historical context (as in a timeline), whereas the philosophy of history is the study and critique of the human attempt and highly questionable ability (and ultimate failure?) to provide an adequate record of history.
