Writing papers for specific conferences is where philosophy can be lots of fun. It is. Really. Getting up and reading to your peers about something that those who are there are actually interested in can be quite satisfying, especially if there happens an actual exchange of ideas and discussion that brings everyone in the room to that threshold to more knowledge.
Plus, philosophy conferences are often in fun cities, like San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, Reno, Las Vegas. While you're in town, it's easy to sneak off and catch some culture. Good food, clubs, bars, history, hikes, even thrill rides are just a couple stops away.
Don't forget to record your experiences in your philosophy journal. You never know, someday you might need those jots to remember what to say in your autobiography.
